Russian Women and Language Barriers
Question: How hard it is to overcome the language barrier when corresponding with Russian women?
Many Russian women are well educated and they know at least the basics of English. It might be hard to communicate with her at first (unless she went to specialized English school, a linguistic University, or studied English on top of her school curriculum), but it usually gets better with time. If her English is not fluent, try to write using simpler words and don’t use American slang or idioms. If you like to use fancy words, at least make sure they can be found in a dictionary.
It is usually much easier to learn a language if you have someone to practice it with, so write to her often and encourage her to write in English, instead of using translators. This way she will learn faster and you both will save time and money.
Most Russian women are able to speak English fluently after 1 year in the United States. Unless, of course, she only reads Russian books, communicates with Russian friends, watches strictly Russian TV and you speak Russian to her. Some women say that ESL courses in college improved their English a lot, so if you can afford it, do it.
My English was fluent when I came here, but nevertheless it was not easy to get used to American slang and the American accent. After a few months I was able to understand New Yorkers pretty well, but met a person from the South once and couldn’t understand half of what she was saying. It takes time. Be patient and help your Russian woman learn English. It is so much easier to communicate and express love to each other when language is not an issue.
