Are All Russian Wives Great Cooks?

There are many myths, truths and stereotypes about Russian wives. One of them is that all Russian wives are great cooks.

I am proud to say that most Russian women know how to cook from scratch and do it rather well. I am not very proud to say that I learned how to cook only after I got married and it took me awhile to learn how to do it well. :-0

It is unusual for Russian women not to know how to cook, knit or sew. However, if food is one of your weak spots and you are specifically looking for a woman who knows how to cook well, don’t just assume that if she is Russian, she is a great cook. I wasn’t. I didn’t learn how to cook because I didn’t have a need (my grandmother who lived with us was a fantastic cook, who didn’t allow anyone in the kitchen). I didn’t learn how to sew for the same reasons.

After I got married, my Russian genes prevailed and I started learning how to cook. It is not modest of me to say this, but my husband thinks that I am an amazing cook and he always brags about my homemade pizza, my homemade desserts and a bunch of other things to his friends.

Because Russian wives are usually domestic and are very family oriented, good chances are that even if they don’t know how to cook, they will get an overpowering wish to do it.

I have a Russian friend who married a millionaire. The millionaire guy had a cook, but my Russian friend told him to lay the guy off. She said that she will be doing all the cooking, just because she likes it and because it is an act of love that she want to show to her husband. She makes 3 meals a day, cooks everything from scratch. She is tired, but very happy.

I have to confess that I still can’t sew. Even though I am an artist, I think that I have 2 left hands and I am not very exact. I also don’t have patience for sewing or knitting.

My point is – don’t fall for stereotypes. Each woman is different and unique and even though you have to know about her culture and mentality in order to make your relationship successful, don’t believe everything you read in books, forums or even our site . Get to know your woman, ask her questions and then make your own judgments.
