What to Get for Your Russian Wife’s Birthday

You probably already know that gift giving is a big part of Russian culture. If you have a Russian wife and want to make her happy, don’t forget to buy gifts for her, especially for her Birthday.

In Russia they say that it is not the gift that matters, but the attention, so you don’t need to go wild and spend a fortune to make your woman happy. Your gift doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does have to be thoughtful.

Don’t give her cash or gift cards, even if it might seem like a good idea. If you decide to do this anyway, make sure you get her something else as well.

Most Russians like to read, so buying her a good book is a good idea. You may surprise her and buy her a book or two in Russian from Russian book stores in the U.S, such as www.Ruskniga.com www.russkieknigi.com or www.kniga.com. The prices in these stores are very reasonable and the service is great. I shop there all the time and never had a problem. These stores have a good selection of Russian music CD’s, Russian DVD’s, souvenirs and Russian toys for children. Your Russian wife will be thrilled if you surprise her with something Russian.

Most Russian women love flowers and they expect to get them on their birthday. Red or pink roses are usually the best choice. Don’t get her an even number of flowers – it is inappropriate in Russian culture (even number of flowers is for funerals).

Chocolates and/or birthday cake is a must as well. Don’t get her this awful sugary cake with green and blue icing on it. Russians hate this stuff. Find a good bakery, or if you are not afraid of it, bake her a cake. This will surely make her feel special.

You can also take her shopping on her birthday. Take her to the store (not Wall- Mart, something fancier) and tell her she can pick her gift.

Don’t forget about a card. When Russians sign cards, they don’t just buy a card and sign their name on it. It is considered to be impersonal. Write a couple of sentences on your card – how you feel, why you think she is so wonderful, how much you love her etc. You don’t need to be a poet to do this. Just be sincere and write from your heart.

I got my Russian gf a gift card and I think she got offended, even thought she tried not to show it.

I think RW want something more personal and thoughtful.

Gift card is not the best choice, at least in the beginning of your relationship.
