Russian Scammers are Getting Creative

Just to clarify, Russian scammers are not Russian women who post their profiles online. As a matter of fact, many so-called “Russian scammers” are not women and not Russian at all. They are called Russian, because they use Russian dating sites as their scam arena.

Previously, Russian scammers’ techniques were pretty primitive.  They would post pictures of young sexy women on numerous dating sites (usually free dating sites), poke men (or wait for men to poke them), quickly “fall in love” with them and then ask for money. As a rule, Russian scammers were not very creative when asking for money. They would either ask money for travel expenses (ticket, visa, travel agency), English lessons, internet – things which should help her and “beloved” become closer. Or they would ask for money for sick mother, sister, kid, etc.

Russian scammers used to be pretty lazy. They wouldn’t even bother writing different letters to different guys. They would have a set of letters, written in broken English ready to go and then just massively send them to all victims. Many scammers still do it, which makes it easier to spot them. If you ask a Russian lady you are corresponding with, a question about what music she prefers and she sends you a letter back with lots of “hugs and kisses”, but no answer, I would ask again. If she stubbornly doesn’t answer you, most likely she is using pre-written letters and probably “she” is not a she in the first place. You might be exchanging letters with a bunch of guys who massively scam Western men.

Since Russian dating scams became a big issue, more men are aware of them are learned how to protect themselves from fraud. Some hardworking scam artists decided to get creative and came up with new ways to scam people.

They stopped using pre-written letters and started answering questions.

They hired Russian prostitutes to call or receive calls from Western men and pretend to be someone they are not.

They got more tactful when asking for money and starting “hinting” instead of asking.

Don’t get discouraged though. If you are looking for a Russian wife through a legitimate marriage agency (Elena’s Models or Anastasia International), you are greatly reducing chances of being scammed. Russian marriage agencies, who have a good reputation, are trying really hard to protect their databases from scammers. They check girls who are registering to make sure they are real. They have their information and if there is something suspicious going on, they suspend accounts.

Marriage agencies do their best, however you still need to stay alert. If she asks for money, run away.

i met a girl on elenasmodels. we have been communicating since march. she has never asked for money and she has answered most of my questions. she has given me her address, phone number, parents names, etc. i have tried to call her twice, but to no success – she says it is better to call after 9. she writes me from a internet-cafe and her emails are always written around the same time. her routine is to go from work to the gym and when she feels like writing me she stops at the cafe, which is usually 2 or sometimes 3 days a week, including weekends. the only red flag that i have seen and i say this because i heard a similar story, is that she wants to set me up with an apartment when i fly there in july. the story i am referring too said that his experience was the result of a professional dater? he took her out for dinner, his phone came up missing and the apartment was over-priced considerably. should i be concerned?

It is always good to be cautious, no matter how honest she seems to be.

I heard a bunch of stories about as you said “professional daters” before.

Depending on which city you are going, I would do some research or ask people on the web (Yahoo Answers: http://answers.yahoo.com/ is one of the places I suggest) what is the average price of the apartment in the city she is from. Then ask her what the cost is. Just say that you need to know how much cash to bring. You can also use a little white lie (which is a part of Russian culture) and tell her that you have a friend (who went to her city before and has connections) who wants to set you up with an apartment that he stayed at at some point. See how she reacts.

When you are traveling in Russia/Belarus/Ukraine, ALWAYS watch your phone, camera and wallet, especially if you are using public transportation.

You never know, it is possible that she is just trying to be helpful, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Best of luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, some of them do show up, so it is a great idea to check the sites out.

And no problem. Glad to help ;)
